Overview of Our Program

Making the choice of where to receive your emergency medicine training may seem overwhelming. Therefore, we will try to respond to what seems the obvious question, "Why train at the University of Michigan/St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program?" From our perspective there are multiple reasons.

  • Institutional commitment to excellence. Our institutions are committed to providing

    Stablilizing a trauma patient
the resources needed to develop and maintain outstanding residency programs. The goal is to offer our residents the best possible training experience and to develop a national reputation for excellence in our graduates across all subspecialties.
  • Commitment to training physicians for any emergency medicine practice setting. Our program offers substantive EM training in each of the three most common clinical settings: the highly academic university hospital (University of Michigan), the community teaching hospital (St. Joseph Mercy Hospital) and the inner city hospital (Hurley Medical Center). The variety of pathology and diversity of clinical and administrative scenarios available to residents in this program are second to none.
  • Quality of the Emergency Medicine faculty and residents. This program has maintained a national scope from its inception, consistently drawing residents from all over the country. Our current group of residents represents some of the very best students from 30 different medical schools. The same applies to our faculty, a remarkably strong and stable

Turning over the department at the University Hospital
group of leaders in the specialty. The contributions of this group to emergency academic growth are unsurpassed by any other group of faculty in the country. This includes a track record of contributions to resident education, publication of original research, textbooks and textbook chapters, receipt of major research grants, leadership of major specialty organizations, administration of the ABEM exam and service to the hospital and the community. If you are looking for outstanding role models, and lots of them, look no further than this program's faculty.
  • Program commitment to being the best and training the best. Each year we assess what can be done to improve the educational experience and set ambitious goals to achieve those improvements. Thus this is not a static environment with one way of doing things, but rather one that fosters continued improvement through careful prospective planning.
